Anytime we go through a transition, it’s an opportunity to reflect and reconnect.
This is certainly true for the changing of a season, such as with the Summer or Winter Solstice and also with the changing of the calendar year. A time for more balance, between light and dark in the outside world and also within ourselves.

It’s so important!
At these transition moments, I find it very helpful to take a little bit of time to connect with my heart. What is “speaking” to me right now? What values and feelings do I want to keep or bring into my life during the next months, and year?
Here is a short values reflection exercise that you can do and that I have found very helpful.
1. Preparing

- Set aside some time (15 – 30 minutes)
- Gather some paper and colored markers/pencils or any other supplies you would like to use to express yourself.
- If you like, you could play some of your favourite music that inspires you or light a candle or make a hot beverage as a treat to have nearby.
2. Feeling

- When ready, take a few breaths
- Ask yourself, what is it that I really want most to feel and grow for myself? Now, in the coming months, during the next year?
3. Reflecting

- If and once something comes to you, start drawing and writing.
- Tap into your inner knowing or gut feeling. Whatever comes to mind first, put that in the middle of your paper. Don’t judge or step into thinking.
- Continue to ask yourself, what do I want to bring into my life? What types of things will bring me meaning and that I want to give priority to?
- Add these and any other supporting feelings as visual representations all around what you put in the middle.
Tip: This is NOT about a “to do” list or resolutions, but rather what feels meaningful to you. Allow whatever is in you to flow and don’t overthink it! You can also use other mediums or forms of expression such as natural materials, dance, paint etc.
Inspiration

- When it feels complete, look at your creation and see how it feels. Take it in!
- Find a safe place to display it where you can see it daily for a while. Don’t worry about turning it into action right away, simply let it inspire you!
Whatever it is that you’re feeling, listen to it. Your own voice is often the best one to pay attention to.
